Let Joe Biden know America has no free speech if Julian Assange isn’t free.

Our right to express diverse opinions, ideas, and information is vital to a democratic society. Julian is a journalist. He received important information from a source and he published it because Americans have a right to know the truth. It's critical that we protect this fundamental right of free speech.

To do that, we need to let President Biden know an overwhelming majority of Americans wants the charges against Julian dropped and he be reunited with his loving family, including his wife Stella and their two young boys.

With the UK High Court delaying Julian’s extradition by only a matter of weeks, it's urgent we increase pressure on the US Government to free him.

Petition to Free Julian Assange

We, the people of America, united in our commitment to democratic values and the principles enshrined in the First Amendment of the Constitution, respectfully urge President Biden and the Administration of the United States of America to end the prosecution of Mr Julian Assange.

Mr. Assange is an Australian citizen and publisher, being held in Belmarsh prison in the United Kingdom pending the finalisation of an extradition request from the United States government. The charges against him include allegations of espionage, causing great concern among citizens who value the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

We beseech you to consider the following compelling reasons to end the prosecution of Mr. Assange:

  1. Preserving Freedom of Expression: The prosecution of Mr. Assange under the United States Espionage Act raises significant concerns about the right to freedom of expression and the press. It is crucial to protect the rights of all citizens to be informed of the criminal acts committed by governments.

  2. Addressing Political Motivation: There are serious apprehensions about the political motivations behind the charges against Mr. Assange, seemingly aimed at punishing him for exposing war crimes committed by the American military. This raises questions about the impartiality of the legal process.

  3. Upholding Legal Privilege: The violation of Mr. Assange's legal privilege, with the ordering of secret recordings of his meetings with lawyers and conversations while in the Ecuadorian Embassy by the CIA, sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the principles of fair legal proceedings.

  4. Protecting Global Journalism: Prosecuting Mr. Assange on these charges threatens to establish a dangerous precedent of extraterritoriality, endangering journalists and publishers worldwide who reveal government abuses, regardless of political affiliations.

  5. Re-examining the Source of Allegations: It has come to light that a key source of the allegations against Mr. Assange has admitted to fabricating false accusations and has faced charges for numerous crimes, raising doubts about the veracity of the case against him.

  6. Ensuring Just Treatment: Concerns about Mr. Assange's harsh conditions of imprisonment are significant, given that he is held in a high-security prison despite not being a dangerous individual, raising questions about the fairness of his treatment.

  7. Ensuring a Fair Trial: The planned trial in the "Espionage court" of the Eastern District of Virginia has raised concerns about the impartiality of the proceedings and the possibility of a fair trial for Mr. Assange.

  8. Rejecting Inhumane Punishment: The potential sentence of 175 years in a maximum-security prison facing Mr. Assange amounts to a cruel and inhumane punishment, akin to an effective death penalty.

  9. Recognizing Health and Humanity: The unreasonable treatment and lack of adequate medical assistance has had severe consequences on Mr. Assange's well-being, leading to a stroke that has significantly impacted his life.

  10. Acknowledging Contributions to Democracy: Mr. Assange is an innocent man whose role in contributing to democracy should be recognized, and he should not be prosecuted in a way that aims to deter others from exposing vital information of public interest.

We, the concerned people of America, urge the Administration to uphold the principles of free speech and free press by ending the prosecution of Mr. Julian Assange, thereby taking a crucial step to reaffirm America's commitment to its core values.
